What does it remain today of a choreographic work that is considered a milestone in the history of Western dance at the beginning of the 20th century? In what forms has it survived over time? Who will take up its legacy?
The project Swans Never Die invites audiences and artists to think about The Dying Swan as an opportunity to learn about the many forms of its existence over time, since it was choreographed by Michel Fokine for Anna Pavlova in 1905.
Following the stages of this journey through the history and memory of dance, the spectator will be able to discover the bodies in which a choreographic work from the past survives, who takes up its legacy and the values it can transmit today and in the future.

In the evening Swans_2, the traditional version of The Dying Swan is presented with new creations by Camilla Monga and Collettivo MINE.
The performance will be followed by a talk hosted by the Professor Alessandro Pontremoli.

Camilla Monga’s creation starts from the artistic synesthesia between dance and music, which becomes a crasis in the chosen title: Swaën, a combination of the noun Swan and part of the surname of the composer of  The Dying Swan: Saint-Saens.
Swaën is a jazz trio that combines improvised and more structured movements involving one female dancer, the trombone player Filippo Vignato and the multi-instrumentalist Emanuele Maniscalco.
They are the authors of a re-writing of piece no. 13 of The Carnival of the Animals.

Living like I know I’m gonna die is a dance for five bodies.
Two couples and a single one form a group in reciprocity, a single body made by linked arms
unfolds in a network of lightning-fast encounters that cross the space with a progressive and
unavoidable rhythm.
The sudden rhythmic character articulates a continuous, intensely dense and intrinsically
fleeting movement, destined to change, dissolve and end challenging time and its ephemeral
nature.
In this way Pavlova daces the dying swan for Fokine, like a real fight against death,
embodying a constant symbol of the transience of existence and of life’s things.

Choreography Michel Fokine for Anna Pavlova
Music Camille Saint-Saëns
Dancer Martina Dall’Asta from Nuovo Balletto Classico

The historical choreography by Fokine The Dying Swan, performed from Nuovo Balletto di Toscana, ends the evening.
